California Cities: Transitioning to the 1900s

As the 1900s began, many photographers and artists had made their way to California, attracted by early photography in Stockton and beautiful pictures of Yosemite. Not many photographers were true natives of California or Stockton in general, but they all made their careers photographing the area.

Some remained firmly in Stockton with their careers, like Covert Martin, but others like John Spooner captured both Stockton and other areas like Sacramento. As the years went by and California was catapulted into the 1940s, Richard Yoshikawa, a man interned for his Japanese heritage, documented all the people within his internment camp with his photography. Photography in California was slowly moving from nature and more towards the cities and people that lived in them.
